Have you heard of Jesse James? He was an American outlaw, robber, guerrilla, and Southern sympathizer during and after the Civil War. He joined pro-Confederate guerrillas known as "bushwhackers" operating in Missouri and Kansas and was accused of participating in atrocities against Union soldiers. Despite the brutality of his crimes though, Jesse James gained national fame and often popular sympathy.
